at sandy hook elementary school. six adults including 29-year-old rachel davino who dressed up in costume and broke out in song to help her students learn. and ann marie murphy whose parents say shield some of her students from the hail of bullets. full-time substitute teacher lauren russo dreamed as a little girl of becoming a teacher, even making a set of dolls her first classroom of students. mary was the school psychologist who for years helped children deal with life's terrible challenges. when the first shots were fired, she and school principal dawn hochsprung quickly headed toward the danger. the two women reportedly lunged at the gunman and died trying to overtake him. there was also 27-year-old teacher vickie lee soto who died trying to protect her students. >> their father, carlos, was up the other night identifying vickie's body and was just told kind of how she was found, protecting her kids, doing instinctively what she knew to do, protecting her children. >> the gunman's mother, nancy lanza, was the first victim last friday, shot by her own son in their own home. and the ki

years old. none of the children were older than 7. we'll remember rachel davino, anne marie murphy. we will remember her and so will this community. we'll remember 30-year-old lauren russeau who wanted to be a teacher before she even started kindergarten. she was a full time substitute at sandy hook. we'll remember mary sherlach, the proud mother of two young daughters. we will remember victoria soto. no one in this town will ever forget victoria soto, she died trying to protect the lives of her first graders. she was the oldest of four children. and, of course, the school principal dawn hochsprung. even little kids know when someone cares about them, and that was her. we will remember her as we remember all 26 lives lost in that school that day. 26 lives cut short friday morning at sandy creek elementary school here in newtown, connecticut. newtown is now the nation's heartache. it is our open wound. a whole so large that we're not sure god can fill it. something to hope for. his hope is, everyone's hope, as wez bring you some moments from tonight's vigil, starting with first responde

people stepped forward who really became heroes of the day. four teachers, rachel davino, anne marie murphy, lauren rousseau, victor yoa soat pe merry sherlach the school psychologist, and dawn hochsprung the principal who walked into the face of this gunman to try to stop him from harming any chirp. we'd like to think any of us would rise to a standard of courage they showed. i hope we will but they did, and in so doing reminded us even those who just go to work every single day can be called on to show bravery. these teachers did. the school psychologistnd principal and we hoeo them a great -- owe them a great deb of gratitude as i'm sure all the families in the school feel. we bray for the first victim, nancy lanza and reflect on our responsibility. i thought about it over the weekend, and wroi an article for "the chicago tribune" this morning and here's what it said. what would it take -- what will it fake for a majority of americans to speak out for sensible firearms policy in our nation? it will take more than a congresswoman being shot point blank in the face as she gathers fo

about kept begging her and it ended up being the last thing she wore. there is also rachel divino and her boyfriend was going to propose and christmas eve. beater, thank you very much. peter doocy. the church in newtown will be the host of 10 funerals this week and next week. it reminds me of 9/11 when we saw multiple funerals taking place in local churches in this area. very, very hard for these communities. bill: you can't hit a golf ball or throw a snowball in this town without hitting a church of some denomination. faith is so important to the people who live in newtown. there is a makeshift memorial. there are many of them set up throughout town. this is the area where they set up 26 christmas trees over the weekend. and nower in allowing people from the community to walk the half mile down this road to place flowers or lay a wreath or hang an ornament. this is the closest you can get to the elementary school. you have to go 100 yard down dickinson lane and peel to the right in the parking lot before the school reveals in front of you. this is how we grieve and this is how so
